The 25,000 ON THE MOVE Challenge is an original and innovative program designed to get Department of Justice Employees, family members and friends to participate in 15 minutes of physical activity for 25 days in the month of June. This FREE program was open to JOHO members and DOJ employees, families and friends of all ages. The program was designed to allow individuals flexibility to do any type of activity, anytime, and anywhere. Although this was an individual based challenge, JOHO Fitness Center was one of more than 40 participating in the event. Preparation for 25,000 ON THE MOVE began in late 2008 and the challenge was introduced to all L&T staff in early 2009 using a web-based teaser video. A formal program announcement was conducted by the President/Owner of L&T Health and Fitness and was followed by a staff training session to detail plans for marketing and implementing the 25,000 ON THE MOVE Challenge. The tools/resources for the program were made available to the JOHO Fitness Center staff through L&T’s intranet and one staff person was designated “coach” to help with program implementation. An ON THE MOVE website was created to facilitate marketing, communication, and program registration, which began on May 1, 2009. The online registration system was linked to the President’s Challenge website, which was used for activity tracking throughout the 25 days. When the challenge began on June 1, 2009, participants were able to easily access the President’s Challenge to log activity through the ON THE MOVE website. The JOHO Fitness Center, L&T and DOJ kicked off the start of the Challenge with an anniversary party featuring free food, giveaways and raffles. Former L&T staff who worked at the JOHO Fitness Center over the past 25-years returned to visit with members, staff and friends. The Fitness Center staff also provided registration assistance for those who were still interested in participating in the event. The 25,000 ON THE MOVE Challenge brought a sense of excitement to the fitness center and entire agency. Existing members had a new source of motivation and new members joined the fitness center family. Non-exercisers made a commitment to 15 minutes of activity each day and are now moving toward a more active lifestyle. The fitness center, agency, and program participants all scored a big win.
